Yikes...another bird box death trap. No ventilation. No drainage. Perches encourage predators. Access hole invites predator to grab chicks and eggs. And to watch the complete irresponsible use of a table saw make me cringe.

I'm working on the same problem. A good friend of mine recently had a couple of trees felled - a maple and a sycamore. I blagged a roughly 1m long maple log and a couple of the sycamore logs around half that length. Started by splitting the logs onto quarters (with metal wedges), then roughly chopped a couple of flat faces (at right angles - ish). A bit like carving an elephant - I'm no expert with axes but, basically chop off anything that doesn't look like an elephant. In this case, anything sticking out that is massively out of square, to save huge numbers of passes though the surface planer. Then run the best (flattest) face over the surface planer (just a cheap planer /thicknesser from Screwfix) until you get a continuous flat - not looking for 100% perfection, just a continuous flat area, wavy as sin from one end to the other that can be pressed against the fence to make a reference face. Missing out loads here, but the table saw could then take alternating cuts at 90 degrees to produce quite narrow, but beautiful planks of quarter-sawn hardwood. First cut was too deep for the table saw, so finished it with a cheap but great Bahco hand saw. Plenty of 'gleaning' followed; squaring up waney edges, trimming off shaked ends etc, so lots of different shapes and sizes of stock once it's all dried out. Massive amount of time and work, but the wood is gorgeous, way beyond anything I could afford to buy, and I made it. What an exciting future working out what I can make with all this. Win win win etc. Have tried pallets, but logs are real wood, and rarely have nails. Even green, I've run a hand plane over a couple of my new planks and it's a different planet guys! Cost me a set of metal wedges, a small axe (and the time to get it properly sharp); everything else I already had.
